GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) vs Radeon R9 280X

Intro

The GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) uses a 80 nm design. nVidia has set the core speed at 450 MHz. The DDR2 RAM runs at a frequency of 400 MHz on this particular card. It features 8 SPUs as well as 4 TAUs and 2 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R9 280X, which uses a 28 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 850 MHz. The GDDR5 memory runs at a speed of 1500 MHz on this card. It features 2048 SPUs along with 128 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) 40 Watts
Radeon R9 280X 250 Watts
Difference: 210 Watts (525%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon R9 280X should in theory be a lot better than the GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) overall. (explain)

Radeon R9 280X 288000 MB/sec
GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) 6400 MB/sec
Difference: 281600 (4400%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 280X should be quite a bit (approximately 5944%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the GeForce 8300 GS (OEM). (explain)

Radeon R9 280X 108800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) 1800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 107000 (5944%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon R9 280X is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon R9 280X 27200 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) 900 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 26300 (2922%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
