Geforce GTX 760 vs Radeon HD 4850 1GB

Intro

The Geforce GTX 760 features a clock frequency of 980 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1502 MHz. It also uses a 256-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It features 1152 SPUs, 96 TAUs, and 32 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon HD 4850 1GB, which makes use of a 55 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 625 MHz. The GDDR4 RAM runs at a frequency of 993 MHz on this particular model. It features 800(160x5) SPUs along with 40 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

In theory, the Geforce GTX 760 should perform a lot faster than the Radeon HD 4850 1GB in general. (explain)

Geforce GTX 760 192256 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4850 1GB 63552 MB/sec
Difference: 128704 (203%)

Texel Rate

The Geforce GTX 760 is much (approximately 276%) more effective at AF than the Radeon HD 4850 1GB. (explain)

Geforce GTX 760 94080 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4850 1GB 25000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 69080 (276%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Geforce GTX 760 is the winner, by a large margin. (explain)

Geforce GTX 760 31360 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4850 1GB 10000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 21360 (214%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
