Geforce GTX 760 vs Radeon HD 5770

Intro

The Geforce GTX 760 makes use of a 28 nm design. nVidia has set the core speed at 980 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a speed of 1502 MHz on this model. It features 1152 SPUs along with 96 Texture Address Units and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 5770, which comes with a clock frequency of 850 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1200 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is comprised of 800(160x5) SPUs, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Difference: 62 Watts (57%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Geforce GTX 760 should perform a lot faster than the Radeon HD 5770 in general. (explain)

Geforce GTX 760 192256 MB/sec
Radeon HD 5770 76800 MB/sec
Difference: 115456 (150%)

Texel Rate

The Geforce GTX 760 is much (approximately 177%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 5770. (explain)

Geforce GTX 760 94080 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5770 34000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 60080 (177%)

Pixel Rate

The Geforce GTX 760 is quite a bit (approximately 131%) more effective at anti-aliasing than the Radeon HD 5770, and also will be able to handle higher resolutions better. (explain)

Geforce GTX 760 31360 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5770 13600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 17760 (131%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
