GeForce 8800 GS vs Geforce GTX 770

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GS uses a 65 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 550 MHz. The GDDR3 RAM runs at a frequency of 800 MHz on this specific model. It features 96 SPUs along with 48 Texture Address Units and 12 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Geforce GTX 770, which has core clock speeds of 1046 MHz on the GPU, and 1753 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 1536 SPUs along with 128 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 8800 GS 105 Watts
Geforce GTX 770 230 Watts
Difference: 125 Watts (119%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Geforce GTX 770 should theoretically perform a lot faster than the GeForce 8800 GS in general. (explain)

Geforce GTX 770 224384 MB/sec
GeForce 8800 GS 38400 MB/sec
Difference: 185984 (484%)

Texel Rate

The Geforce GTX 770 should be a lot (approximately 407%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce 8800 GS. (explain)

Geforce GTX 770 133888 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8800 GS 26400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 107488 (407%)

Pixel Rate

The Geforce GTX 770 should be quite a bit (more or less 407%) better at AA than the GeForce 8800 GS, and also able to handle higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Geforce GTX 770 33472 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8800 GS 6600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 26872 (407%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
