Geforce GTX 780 vs Radeon HD 5770

Intro

The Geforce GTX 780 features a core clock speed of 863 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1502 MHz. It also uses a 384-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It features 2304 SPUs, 192 TAUs, and 48 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon HD 5770, which features GPU clock speed of 850 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory set to run at 1200 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 800(160x5) SPUs, 40 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Radeon HD 5770 108 Watts
Geforce GTX 780 250 Watts
Difference: 142 Watts (131%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Geforce GTX 780, in theory, should perform a lot faster than the Radeon HD 5770 in general. (explain)

Geforce GTX 780 288384 MB/sec
Radeon HD 5770 76800 MB/sec
Difference: 211584 (276%)

Texel Rate

The Geforce GTX 780 should be a lot (more or less 387%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 5770. (explain)

Geforce GTX 780 165696 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5770 34000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 131696 (387%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Geforce GTX 780 is superior to the Radeon HD 5770, by a large margin. (explain)

Geforce GTX 780 41424 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5770 13600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 27824 (205%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
