GeForce GTX 650 Ti vs Radeon HD 6950 2GB

Intro

The GeForce GTX 650 Ti uses a 28 nm design. nVidia has set the core speed at 928 MHz. The GDDR5 memory runs at a frequency of 1350 MHz on this card. It features 768 SPUs as well as 64 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 6950 2GB, which comes with core speeds of 800 MHz on the GPU, and 1250 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 1408 SPUs as well as 88 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 200 Watts
Difference: 90 Watts (82%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon HD 6950 2GB should be quite a bit faster than the GeForce GTX 650 Ti overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 160000 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 650 Ti 86400 MB/sec
Difference: 73600 (85%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6950 2GB is a bit (approximately 19%) more effective at texture filtering than the GeForce GTX 650 Ti. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 70400 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 650 Ti 59392 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 11008 (19%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6950 2GB is superior to the GeForce GTX 650 Ti, by far. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 25600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 650 Ti 14848 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 10752 (72%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card can possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
