Radeon HD 4770 vs Radeon HD 5670

Intro

The Radeon HD 4770 has a GPU core speed of 750 MHz, and the 512 MB of GDDR5 RAM is set to run at 800 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 640(128x5) SPUs, 32 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon HD 5670, which has a clock frequency of 775 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1000 MHz. It also makes use of a 128-bit bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It is made up of 400(80x5) SPUs, 20 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Radeon HD 5670 61 Watts
Radeon HD 4770 80 Watts
Difference: 19 Watts (31%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon HD 5670 should perform quite a bit faster than the Radeon HD 4770 overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 5670 64000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4770 51200 MB/sec
Difference: 12800 (25%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 4770 should be a lot (about 55%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 5670. (explain)

Radeon HD 4770 24000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5670 15500 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 8500 (55%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 4770 should be a lot (more or less 94%) faster with regards to AA than the Radeon HD 5670, and will be able to handle higher screen resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Radeon HD 4770 12000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5670 6200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 5800 (94%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
