Geforce GTX 680 vs Radeon HD 7770

Intro

The Geforce GTX 680 makes use of a 28 nm design. nVidia has set the core frequency at 1006 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM is set to run at a speed of 1502 MHz on this particular model. It features 1536 SPUs along with 128 Texture Address Units and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon HD 7770, which features core clock speeds of 1000 MHz on the GPU, and 1125 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 640 SPUs along with 40 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

The Geforce GTX 680 should theoretically be a lot faster than the Radeon HD 7770 in general. (explain)

Geforce GTX 680 192256 MB/sec
Radeon HD 7770 72000 MB/sec
Difference: 120256 (167%)

Texel Rate

The Geforce GTX 680 is much (about 222%) more effective at AF than the Radeon HD 7770. (explain)

Geforce GTX 680 128768 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 7770 40000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 88768 (222%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Geforce GTX 680 is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

Geforce GTX 680 32192 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 7770 16000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 16192 (101%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.

these results are very surprising i thought the 7770 would have been more of a challenge. i own a sapphire hd 7770 ghz oc... perhaps this card should be compared to the gtx 680 instead of the stock 7770
