GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) vs Radeon HD 7850

Intro

The GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) has core speeds of 450 MHz on the GPU, and 400 MHz on the 128 MB of DDR2 memory. It features 8 SPUs as well as 4 TAUs and 2 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 7850, which comes with a core clock frequency of 860 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1200 MHz. It also makes use of a 256-bit bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 1024 SPUs, 64 TAUs, and 32 ROPs.

Radeon HD 7850 130 Watts
Difference: 90 Watts (225%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 7850 should in theory be much faster than the GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 7850 153600 MB/sec
GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) 6400 MB/sec
Difference: 147200 (2300%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 7850 will be quite a bit (more or less 2958%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the GeForce 8300 GS (OEM). (explain)

Radeon HD 7850 55040 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) 1800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 53240 (2958%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 7850 should be much (more or less 2958%) better at AA than the GeForce 8300 GS (OEM), and also capable of handling higher screen resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon HD 7850 27520 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) 900 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 26620 (2958%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
