GeForce GTX 570 vs Radeon HD 7850

Intro

The GeForce GTX 570 has a clock speed of 732 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 950 MHz. It also uses a 320-bit bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It features 480 SPUs, 60 Texture Address Units, and 40 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 7850, which comes with a GPU core clock speed of 860 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory running at 1200 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 1024 SPUs, 64 Texture Address Units, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 7850 130 Watts
GeForce GTX 570 219 Watts
Difference: 89 Watts (68%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 7850, in theory, should perform a small bit faster than the GeForce GTX 570 in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 7850 153600 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 570 152000 MB/sec
Difference: 1600 (1%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 7850 should be quite a bit (more or less 25%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the GeForce GTX 570. (explain)

Radeon HD 7850 55040 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 570 43920 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 11120 (25%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 570 is the winner, but it probably won't make a huge difference. (explain)

GeForce GTX 570 29280 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 7850 27520 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1760 (6%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
