Radeon HD 3650 vs Radeon HD 7770

Intro

The Radeon HD 3650 has core clock speeds of 725 MHz on the GPU, and 800 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR4 RAM. It features 120(24x5) SPUs along with 8 TAUs and 4 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 7770, which features a core clock frequency of 1000 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1125 MHz. It also makes use of a 128-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 640 SPUs, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 3650 78 Watts
Radeon HD 7770 80 Watts
Difference: 2 Watts (3%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 7770, in theory, should perform much faster than the Radeon HD 3650 in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 7770 72000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 3650 25600 MB/sec
Difference: 46400 (181%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 7770 will be much (approximately 590%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 3650. (explain)

Radeon HD 7770 40000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3650 5800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 34200 (590%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon HD 7770 is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon HD 7770 16000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 3650 2900 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 13100 (452%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
