GeForce 8800 GT 256MB vs Radeon HD 7750

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GT 256MB features a core clock speed of 600 MHz and a GDDR3 memory speed of 700 MHz. It also uses a 256-bit bus, and makes use of a 65 nm design. It features 112 SPUs, 56 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon HD 7750, which has core clock speeds of 800 MHz on the GPU, and 1125 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 512 SPUs along with 32 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

In theory, the Radeon HD 7750 will be 61% quicker than the GeForce 8800 GT 256MB overall, because of its higher data rate. (explain)

Radeon HD 7750 72000 MB/sec
GeForce 8800 GT 256MB 44800 MB/sec
Difference: 27200 (61%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 8800 GT 256MB should be a lot (more or less 31%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 7750. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GT 256MB 33600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 7750 25600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 8000 (31%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 7750 will be a lot (about 33%) more effective at full screen anti-aliasing than the GeForce 8800 GT 256MB, and also will be able to handle higher screen resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Radeon HD 7750 12800 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8800 GT 256MB 9600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3200 (33%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
