GeForce 9600 GSO ASUS 512 vs Radeon HD 7750

Intro

The GeForce 9600 GSO ASUS 512 has core speeds of 550 MHz on the GPU, and 500 MHz on the 512 MB of DDR2 RAM. It features 96 SPUs along with 48 TAUs and 12 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 7750, which has a core clock frequency of 800 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1125 MHz. It also makes use of a 128-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 512 SPUs, 32 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Radeon HD 7750 55 Watts
GeForce 9600 GSO ASUS 512 84 Watts
Difference: 29 Watts (53%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 7750 should theoretically perform quite a bit faster than the GeForce 9600 GSO ASUS 512 overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 7750 72000 MB/sec
GeForce 9600 GSO ASUS 512 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 56000 (350%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 9600 GSO ASUS 512 will be just a bit (about 3%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 7750. (explain)

GeForce 9600 GSO ASUS 512 26400 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 7750 25600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 800 (3%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 7750 should be quite a bit (more or less 94%) more effective at AA than the GeForce 9600 GSO ASUS 512, and also will be capable of handling higher resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

Radeon HD 7750 12800 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 9600 GSO ASUS 512 6600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 6200 (94%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface within a second. It is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
