GeForce 9600 GSO ASUS 512 vs Radeon HD 7750

Intro

The GeForce 9600 GSO ASUS 512 features a GPU core clock speed of 550 MHz, and the 512 MB of DDR2 memory runs at 500 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 96 SPUs, 48 Texture Address Units, and 12 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 7750, which features a clock frequency of 800 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1125 MHz. It also features a 128-bit memory bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It features 512 SPUs, 32 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 7750 55 Watts
GeForce 9600 GSO ASUS 512 84 Watts
Difference: 29 Watts (53%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon HD 7750 should be 350% faster than the GeForce 9600 GSO ASUS 512 in general, due to its greater bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon HD 7750 72000 MB/sec
GeForce 9600 GSO ASUS 512 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 56000 (350%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 9600 GSO ASUS 512 should be a little bit (about 3%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 7750. (explain)

GeForce 9600 GSO ASUS 512 26400 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 7750 25600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 800 (3%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 7750 is much (more or less 94%) faster with regards to FSAA than the GeForce 9600 GSO ASUS 512, and able to handle higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon HD 7750 12800 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 9600 GSO ASUS 512 6600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 6200 (94%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
