GeForce GTX 465 vs Radeon HD 7950 3GB

Intro

The GeForce GTX 465 uses a 40 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 607 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM is set to run at a speed of 802 MHz on this model. It features 352 SPUs along with 44 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 7950 3GB, which has a core clock frequency of 800 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1250 MHz. It also uses a 384-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It features 1792 SPUs, 112 Texture Address Units, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Both cards have the same power consumption.

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 7950 3GB should theoretically be a lot faster than the GeForce GTX 465 in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 7950 3GB 240000 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 465 102592 MB/sec
Difference: 137408 (134%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 7950 3GB should be a lot (more or less 235%) better at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GTX 465. (explain)

Radeon HD 7950 3GB 89600 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 465 26708 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 62892 (235%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 7950 3GB should be a lot (approximately 32%) more effective at anti-aliasing than the GeForce GTX 465, and also capable of handling higher resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon HD 7950 3GB 25600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 465 19424 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 6176 (32%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
