GeForce GTX 550 Ti vs GeForce GTX 560

Intro

The GeForce GTX 550 Ti comes with a GPU core speed of 900 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory is set to run at 1026 MHz through a 192-bit bus. It also is made up of 192 Stream Processors, 32 TAUs, and 24 ROPs.

Compare that to the GeForce GTX 560, which features core speeds of 810 MHz on the GPU, and 1001 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 336 SPUs along with 56 TAUs and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Benchmarks

These are real-world performance benchmarks that were submitted by Hardware Compare users. The scores seen here are the average of all benchmarks submitted for each respective test and hardware.

3DMark Fire Strike Graphics Score

GeForce GTX 560 3030 points
GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1897 points
Difference: 1133 (60%)

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 550 Ti 116 Watts
GeForce GTX 560 150 Watts
Difference: 34 Watts (29%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GTX 560 is 30% quicker than the GeForce GTX 550 Ti in general, because of its greater bandwidth. (explain)

GeForce GTX 560 128128 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 550 Ti 98496 MB/sec
Difference: 29632 (30%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 560 will be much (approximately 58%) better at AF than the GeForce GTX 550 Ti. (explain)

GeForce GTX 560 45360 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 550 Ti 28800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 16560 (58%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 560 is the winner, but only just. (explain)

GeForce GTX 560 25920 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 550 Ti 21600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4320 (20%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
