Radeon HD 5670 vs Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB

Intro

The Radeon HD 5670 features core clock speeds of 775 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 400(80x5) SPUs along with 20 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB, which features a clock frequency of 800 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1000 MHz. It also features a 128-bit bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is comprised of 480 SPUs, 24 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 5670 61 Watts
Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB 63 Watts
Difference: 2 Watts (3%)

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have the exact same memory bandwidth, so in theory they should have the same performance. (explain)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB is a lot (about 24%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 5670. (explain)

Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB 19200 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5670 15500 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 3700 (24%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB should be a bit (approximately 3%) faster with regards to full screen anti-aliasing than the Radeon HD 5670, and also should be capable of handling higher resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB 6400 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5670 6200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 200 (3%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
