GeForce 8800 Ultra vs Radeon HD 6670 (OEM)

Intro

The GeForce 8800 Ultra uses a 90 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core frequency at 612 MHz. The GDDR3 RAM runs at a speed of 1080 MHz on this model. It features 128 SPUs as well as 64 TAUs and 24 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM), which comes with a clock frequency of 800 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1000 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It features 480 SPUs, 24 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 63 Watts
GeForce 8800 Ultra 171 Watts
Difference: 108 Watts (171%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce 8800 Ultra should be much faster than the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) overall. (explain)

GeForce 8800 Ultra 103680 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 64000 MB/sec
Difference: 39680 (62%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 8800 Ultra will be a lot (approximately 104%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM). (explain)

GeForce 8800 Ultra 39168 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 19200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 19968 (104%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce 8800 Ultra is a better choice, by far. (explain)

GeForce 8800 Ultra 14688 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 6400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 8288 (130%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
