Radeon HD 5970 vs Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB

Intro

The Radeon HD 5970 uses a 40 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 725 MHz. The GDDR5 memory runs at a frequency of 1000 MHz on this specific card. It features 1600 SPUs along with 160 TAUs and 64 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB, which features core clock speeds of 650 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 480 SPUs as well as 24 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB 50 Watts
Radeon HD 5970 294 Watts
Difference: 244 Watts (488%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 5970 should in theory perform quite a bit faster than the Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 5970 256000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB 64000 MB/sec
Difference: 192000 (300%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 5970 is quite a bit (more or less 1387%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB. (explain)

Radeon HD 5970 232000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB 15600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 216400 (1387%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 5970 should be quite a bit (approximately 1685%) faster with regards to full screen anti-aliasing than the Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB, and able to handle higher resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

Radeon HD 5970 92800 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB 5200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 87600 (1685%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

One or more cards in this comparison are multi-core. This means that their bandwidth, texel and pixel rates are theoretically doubled - this does not mean the card will actually perform twice as fast, but only that it should in theory be able to. Actual game benchmarks will give a more accurate idea of what it's capable of.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
