GeForce 8800 GTX vs Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GTX features a GPU clock speed of 575 MHz, and the 768 MB of GDDR3 memory runs at 900 MHz through a 384-bit bus. It also is made up of 128 SPUs, 64 Texture Address Units, and 24 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB, which features core clock speeds of 750 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 160 SPUs as well as 8 Texture Address Units and 4 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB 31 Watts
GeForce 8800 GTX 155 Watts
Difference: 124 Watts (400%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the GeForce 8800 GTX should in theory be a lot superior to the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB in general. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GTX 86400 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB 28800 MB/sec
Difference: 57600 (200%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 8800 GTX should be much (more or less 513%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GTX 36800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB 6000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 30800 (513%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce 8800 GTX is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GTX 13800 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB 3000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 10800 (360%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
