GeForce 8600 GT 1GB DDR2 vs Radeon HD 6450 (OEM)

Intro

The GeForce 8600 GT 1GB DDR2 comes with core clock speeds of 540 MHz on the GPU, and 400 MHz on the 1024 MB of DDR2 memory. It features 32 SPUs along with 16 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM), which makes use of a 40 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 625 MHz. The GDDR3 memory works at a frequency of 800 MHz on this card. It features 160 SPUs as well as 8 TAUs and 4 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 31 Watts
GeForce 8600 GT 1GB DDR2 47 Watts
Difference: 16 Watts (52%)

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have exactly the same memory bandwidth, so in theory they should have the same performance. (explain)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 8600 GT 1GB DDR2 will be a lot (about 73%) better at AF than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM). (explain)

GeForce 8600 GT 1GB DDR2 8640 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 5000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 3640 (73%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce 8600 GT 1GB DDR2 will be quite a bit (more or less 73%) more effective at FSAA than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM), and also should be capable of handling higher screen resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

GeForce 8600 GT 1GB DDR2 4320 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 2500 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1820 (73%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
