Radeon HD 4750 vs Radeon HD 6450 (OEM)

Intro

The Radeon HD 4750 uses a 40 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 730 MHz. The GDDR5 memory is set to run at a speed of 800 MHz on this particular card. It features 640(128x5) SPUs along with 32 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM), which comes with core clock speeds of 625 MHz on the GPU, and 800 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR3 memory. It features 160 SPUs along with 8 TAUs and 4 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 31 Watts
Radeon HD 4750 75 Watts
Difference: 44 Watts (142%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon HD 4750 should be 300% quicker than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) in general, due to its higher bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon HD 4750 51200 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 38400 (300%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 4750 should be much (about 367%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM). (explain)

Radeon HD 4750 23360 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 5000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 18360 (367%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 4750 is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon HD 4750 11680 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 2500 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 9180 (367%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
