Radeon HD 4790 vs Radeon HD 6450 (OEM)

Intro

The Radeon HD 4790 comes with a GPU core speed of 600 MHz, and the 512 MB of GDDR5 RAM is set to run at 800 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 640(128x5) SPUs, 32 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM), which uses a 40 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 625 MHz. The GDDR3 memory works at a frequency of 800 MHz on this specific model. It features 160 SPUs along with 8 Texture Address Units and 4 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon HD 4790 should theoretically be quite a bit superior to the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 4790 102400 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 89600 (700%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 4790 is quite a bit (more or less 284%) better at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM). (explain)

Radeon HD 4790 19200 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 5000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 14200 (284%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 4790 will be quite a bit (about 284%) better at anti-aliasing than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM), and able to handle higher resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Radeon HD 4790 9600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 2500 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 7100 (284%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
