Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) vs Radeon HD 6950 2GB

Intro

The Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) features a GPU core speed of 625 MHz, and the 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM is set to run at 800 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is made up of 160 SPUs, 8 TAUs, and 4 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 6950 2GB, which features a GPU core clock speed of 800 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory set to run at 1250 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 1408 SPUs, 88 TAUs, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 200 Watts
Difference: 169 Watts (545%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon HD 6950 2GB should perform much faster than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 160000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 147200 (1150%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6950 2GB will be quite a bit (about 1308%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM). (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 70400 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 5000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 65400 (1308%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6950 2GB is superior to the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM), by far. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 25600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 2500 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 23100 (924%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
