GeForce GT 440 3GB vs Radeon HD 6450 (OEM)

Intro

The GeForce GT 440 3GB uses a 40 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 594 MHz. The GDDR3 memory works at a frequency of 900 MHz on this particular card. It features 144 SPUs along with 24 Texture Address Units and 24 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM), which features a GPU core clock speed of 625 MHz, and 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM set to run at 800 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is comprised of 160 SPUs, 8 TAUs, and 4 ROPs.

Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 31 Watts
GeForce GT 440 3GB 56 Watts
Difference: 25 Watts (81%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GT 440 3GB should perform quite a bit faster than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) in general. (explain)

GeForce GT 440 3GB 43200 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 30400 (238%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GT 440 3GB is much (approximately 185%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM). (explain)

GeForce GT 440 3GB 14256 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 5000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 9256 (185%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GT 440 3GB is a lot (about 470%) more effective at FSAA than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM), and should be able to handle higher screen resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

GeForce GT 440 3GB 14256 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 2500 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 11756 (470%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
