GeForce 830M vs GeForce 920M

Intro

The GeForce 830M uses a 28 nm design. nVidia has set the core frequency at 1029 MHz. The DDR3 RAM is set to run at a speed of 900 MHz on this card. It features 256 SPUs as well as 16 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Compare that to the GeForce 920M, which has GPU clock speed of 954 MHz, and 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM running at 900 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is comprised of 384 SPUs, 32 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have the exact same memory bandwidth, so theoretically they should perform exactly the same. (explain)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 920M is quite a bit (about 85%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the GeForce 830M. (explain)

GeForce 920M 30528 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 830M 16464 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 14064 (85%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce 830M will be a little bit (more or less 8%) faster with regards to AA than the GeForce 920M, and also will be able to handle higher screen resolutions better. (explain)

GeForce 830M 8232 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 920M 7632 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 600 (8%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card could possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
