GeForce 830M vs GeForce 920M

Intro

The GeForce 830M makes use of a 28 nm design. nVidia has set the core speed at 1029 MHz. The DDR3 memory is set to run at a frequency of 900 MHz on this particular model. It features 256 SPUs along with 16 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all of that to the GeForce 920M, which uses a 28 nm design. nVidia has set the core speed at 954 MHz. The DDR3 RAM runs at a frequency of 900 MHz on this specific model. It features 384 SPUs along with 32 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have exactly the same bandwidth, so theoretically they should perform the same. (explain)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 920M should be much (more or less 85%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce 830M. (explain)

GeForce 920M 30528 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 830M 16464 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 14064 (85%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce 830M is the winner, but it probably won't make a huge difference. (explain)

GeForce 830M 8232 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 920M 7632 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 600 (8%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card could possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
