GeForce GTX 570 vs Radeon HD 6850

Intro

The GeForce GTX 570 has a clock speed of 732 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 950 MHz. It also features a 320-bit bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It is comprised of 480 SPUs, 60 Texture Address Units, and 40 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 6850, which has GPU clock speed of 775 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1000 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 960 SPUs, 48 TAUs, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce GTX 570 should theoretically be a bit faster than the Radeon HD 6850 in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 570 152000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6850 128000 MB/sec
Difference: 24000 (19%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 570 will be a small bit (approximately 18%) better at AF than the Radeon HD 6850. (explain)

GeForce GTX 570 43920 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6850 37200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 6720 (18%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 570 is a better choice, not by a very large margin though. (explain)

GeForce GTX 570 29280 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6850 24800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4480 (18%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
