GeForce GT 450 (OEM) vs Radeon HD 6790

Intro

The GeForce GT 450 (OEM) has core speeds of 790 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 1536 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 144 SPUs as well as 24 Texture Address Units and 24 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 6790, which makes use of a 40 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 840 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a frequency of 1050 MHz on this particular model. It features 800 SPUs as well as 40 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GT 450 (OEM) 106 Watts
Radeon HD 6790 150 Watts
Difference: 44 Watts (42%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon HD 6790 should theoretically be quite a bit superior to the GeForce GT 450 (OEM) in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 6790 134400 MB/sec
GeForce GT 450 (OEM) 96000 MB/sec
Difference: 38400 (40%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6790 should be much (approximately 77%) more effective at AF than the GeForce GT 450 (OEM). (explain)

Radeon HD 6790 33600 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 450 (OEM) 18960 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 14640 (77%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GT 450 (OEM) is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce GT 450 (OEM) 18960 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6790 13440 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 5520 (41%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
