GeForce GTX 465 vs Radeon HD 6790

Intro

The GeForce GTX 465 uses a 40 nm design. nVidia has set the core frequency at 607 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a frequency of 802 MHz on this specific model. It features 352 SPUs along with 44 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon HD 6790, which features a GPU core clock speed of 840 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1050 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 800 SPUs, 40 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Radeon HD 6790 134400 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 465 102592 MB/sec
Difference: 31808 (31%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6790 should be much (about 26%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce GTX 465. (explain)

Radeon HD 6790 33600 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 465 26708 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 6892 (26%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 465 will be a lot (more or less 45%) faster with regards to anti-aliasing than the Radeon HD 6790, and should be capable of handling higher screen resolutions better. (explain)

GeForce GTX 465 19424 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6790 13440 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 5984 (45%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
