GeForce GTX 580 vs Radeon HD 3470 256MB

Intro

The GeForce GTX 580 has core clock speeds of 772 MHz on the GPU, and 1002 MHz on the 1536 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 512 SPUs along with 64 TAUs and 48 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 3470 256MB, which makes use of a 55 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 800 MHz. The DDR2 RAM works at a speed of 950 MHz on this specific model. It features 40(8x5) SPUs as well as 4 Texture Address Units and 4 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GTX 580 is 533% faster than the Radeon HD 3470 256MB in general, because of its higher bandwidth. (explain)

GeForce GTX 580 192384 MB/sec
Radeon HD 3470 256MB 30400 MB/sec
Difference: 161984 (533%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 580 will be quite a bit (approximately 1444%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 3470 256MB. (explain)

GeForce GTX 580 49408 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3470 256MB 3200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 46208 (1444%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 580 will be a lot (approximately 1058%) more effective at FSAA than the Radeon HD 3470 256MB, and capable of handling higher screen resolutions more effectively. (explain)

GeForce GTX 580 37056 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 3470 256MB 3200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 33856 (1058%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
