GeForce GTX 465 vs Radeon HD 6950 2GB

Intro

The GeForce GTX 465 comes with core clock speeds of 607 MHz on the GPU, and 802 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 352 SPUs along with 44 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 6950 2GB, which has GPU clock speed of 800 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1250 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 1408 Stream Processors, 88 TAUs, and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Both cards have the same power consumption.

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon HD 6950 2GB is 56% faster than the GeForce GTX 465 overall, because of its higher bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 160000 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 465 102592 MB/sec
Difference: 57408 (56%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6950 2GB is much (more or less 164%) more effective at AF than the GeForce GTX 465. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 70400 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 465 26708 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 43692 (164%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 6950 2GB is quite a bit (about 32%) faster with regards to AA than the GeForce GTX 465, and capable of handling higher resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 25600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 465 19424 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 6176 (32%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card could possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
