GeForce GTX 460 1GB vs Radeon HD 6770

Intro

The GeForce GTX 460 1GB makes use of a 40 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core frequency at 675 MHz. The GDDR5 memory is set to run at a frequency of 900 MHz on this specific card. It features 336 SPUs along with 56 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 6770, which makes use of a 40 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 900 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a speed of 1050 MHz on this particular model. It features 800 SPUs as well as 40 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 6770 108 Watts
GeForce GTX 460 1GB 160 Watts
Difference: 52 Watts (48%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GTX 460 1GB will be 71% faster than the Radeon HD 6770 in general, because of its greater bandwidth. (explain)

GeForce GTX 460 1GB 115200 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6770 67200 MB/sec
Difference: 48000 (71%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 460 1GB will be just a bit (about 5%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 6770. (explain)

GeForce GTX 460 1GB 37800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6770 36000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 1800 (5%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 460 1GB is a better choice, by far. (explain)

GeForce GTX 460 1GB 21600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6770 14400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 7200 (50%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
