GeForce 9600 GSO 384MB vs Radeon HD 6770 1GB

Intro

The GeForce 9600 GSO 384MB comes with a GPU clock speed of 550 MHz, and the 384 MB of GDDR3 RAM runs at 800 MHz through a 192-bit bus. It also is comprised of 96 Stream Processors, 48 Texture Address Units, and 12 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 6770 1GB, which uses a 40 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 900 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM runs at a frequency of 1050 MHz on this model. It features 800 SPUs along with 40 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card could possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
