GeForce RTX 4070 Ti vs Radeon RX 550

Intro

The GeForce RTX 4070 Ti comes with a GPU core speed of 2310 MHz, and the 12288 MB of GDDR6X RAM is set to run at 1313 MHz through a 192-bit bus. It also features 7680 Stream Processors, 240 Texture Address Units, and 80 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 550, which features a GPU core clock speed of 1100 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1750 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 512 SPUs, 32 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 550 50 Watts
GeForce RTX 4070 Ti 285 Watts
Difference: 235 Watts (470%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti will be 350% faster than the Radeon RX 550 in general, due to its higher bandwidth. (explain)

GeForce RTX 4070 Ti 516096 MB/sec
Radeon RX 550 114688 MB/sec
Difference: 401408 (350%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 4070 Ti should be quite a bit (about 1475%) better at AF than the Radeon RX 550. (explain)

GeForce RTX 4070 Ti 554400 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 550 35200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 519200 (1475%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce RTX 4070 Ti 184800 Mpixels/sec
Radeon RX 550 17600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 167200 (950%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
