GeForce RTX 3060 vs Radeon RX 7900 XTX

Intro

The GeForce RTX 3060 makes use of a 8 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 1320 MHz. The GDDR6 RAM runs at a frequency of 1875 MHz on this card. It features 3584 SPUs along with 112 Texture Address Units and 48 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon RX 7900 XTX, which has clock speeds of 1855 MHz on the GPU, and 2500 MHz on the 24576 MB of GDDR6 RAM. It features 6144 SPUs as well as 384 TAUs and 192 Rasterization Operator Units.

GeForce RTX 3060 170 Watts
Radeon RX 7900 XTX 355 Watts
Difference: 185 Watts (109%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon RX 7900 XTX should in theory be much better than the GeForce RTX 3060 in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XTX 983040 MB/sec
GeForce RTX 3060 368640 MB/sec
Difference: 614400 (167%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 7900 XTX is much (more or less 382%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce RTX 3060. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XTX 712320 Mtexels/sec
GeForce RTX 3060 147840 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 564480 (382%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon RX 7900 XTX is superior to the GeForce RTX 3060, by far. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XTX 356160 Mpixels/sec
GeForce RTX 3060 63360 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 292800 (462%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
