GeForce 8800 GT 1GB vs Radeon RX 7900 XT

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GT 1GB features core clock speeds of 600 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR3 memory. It features 112 SPUs along with 56 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 7900 XT, which comes with a clock frequency of 1500 MHz and a GDDR6 memory frequency of 2500 MHz. It also features a 320-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 5 nm design. It is made up of 5376 SPUs, 336 Texture Address Units, and 192 ROPs.

Radeon RX 7900 XT 300 Watts
Difference: 195 Watts (186%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 7900 XT should theoretically be a lot faster than the GeForce 8800 GT 1GB overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XT 819200 MB/sec
GeForce 8800 GT 1GB 57600 MB/sec
Difference: 761600 (1322%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 7900 XT should be much (about 1400%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce 8800 GT 1GB. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XT 504000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8800 GT 1GB 33600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 470400 (1400%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon RX 7900 XT is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XT 288000 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8800 GT 1GB 9600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 278400 (2900%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
