Radeon RX 6800 vs Radeon RX 7900 XT

Intro

The Radeon RX 6800 makes use of a 7 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 1700 MHz. The GDDR6 RAM runs at a speed of 2000 MHz on this particular card. It features 3840 SPUs as well as 240 TAUs and 96 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 7900 XT, which has core clock speeds of 1500 MHz on the GPU, and 2500 MHz on the 20480 MB of GDDR6 memory. It features 5376 SPUs as well as 336 Texture Address Units and 192 Rasterization Operator Units.

Radeon RX 6800 250 Watts
Radeon RX 7900 XT 300 Watts
Difference: 50 Watts (20%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 7900 XT should in theory perform a lot faster than the Radeon RX 6800 in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XT 819200 MB/sec
Radeon RX 6800 524288 MB/sec
Difference: 294912 (56%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 7900 XT will be a lot (more or less 24%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon RX 6800. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XT 504000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 6800 408000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 96000 (24%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 7900 XT is superior to the Radeon RX 6800, by far. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XT 288000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon RX 6800 163200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 124800 (76%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
