GeForce GTX 980 vs GeForce RTX 4080

Intro

The GeForce GTX 980 comes with a clock frequency of 1126 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1750 MHz. It also features a 256-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 2048 SPUs, 128 Texture Address Units, and 64 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the GeForce RTX 4080, which features a clock frequency of 2205 MHz and a GDDR6X memory speed of 1400 MHz. It also uses a 256-bit bus, and uses a 4 nm design. It features 9728 SPUs, 304 TAUs, and 112 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 980 165 Watts
GeForce RTX 4080 320 Watts
Difference: 155 Watts (94%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce RTX 4080 should in theory be quite a bit faster than the GeForce GTX 980 in general. (explain)

GeForce RTX 4080 734003 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 980 224000 MB/sec
Difference: 510003 (228%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 4080 will be a lot (about 365%) better at AF than the GeForce GTX 980. (explain)

GeForce RTX 4080 670320 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 980 144128 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 526192 (365%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce RTX 4080 is superior to the GeForce GTX 980, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce RTX 4080 246960 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 980 72064 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 174896 (243%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
