GeForce RTX 4080 vs Radeon RX 5500

Intro

The GeForce RTX 4080 comes with a GPU core speed of 2205 MHz, and the 16384 MB of GDDR6X RAM is set to run at 1400 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 9728 Stream Processors, 304 TAUs, and 112 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 5500, which has a GPU core clock speed of 1670 MHz, and 4096 MB of GDDR6 RAM set to run at 1750 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 1408 Stream Processors, 88 TAUs, and 32 ROPs.

GeForce RTX 4080 320 Watts
Difference: 170 Watts (113%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce RTX 4080 is 220% quicker than the Radeon RX 5500 overall, due to its higher data rate. (explain)

GeForce RTX 4080 734003 MB/sec
Radeon RX 5500 229376 MB/sec
Difference: 504627 (220%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 4080 is much (more or less 356%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon RX 5500. (explain)

GeForce RTX 4080 670320 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 5500 146960 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 523360 (356%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce RTX 4080 is the winner, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce RTX 4080 246960 Mpixels/sec
Radeon RX 5500 53440 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 193520 (362%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
