GeForce RTX 4080 vs Radeon RX 6900 XT

Intro

The GeForce RTX 4080 makes use of a 4 nm design. nVidia has set the core speed at 2205 MHz. The GDDR6X memory works at a frequency of 1400 MHz on this model. It features 9728 SPUs along with 304 TAUs and 112 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare that to the Radeon RX 6900 XT, which comes with core clock speeds of 1825 MHz on the GPU, and 2000 MHz on the 16384 MB of GDDR6 memory. It features 5120 SPUs as well as 320 TAUs and 128 ROPs.

Difference: 20 Watts (7%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the GeForce RTX 4080 should theoretically be much superior to the Radeon RX 6900 XT in general. (explain)

GeForce RTX 4080 734003 MB/sec
Radeon RX 6900 XT 524288 MB/sec
Difference: 209715 (40%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 4080 is a small bit (about 15%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon RX 6900 XT. (explain)

GeForce RTX 4080 670320 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 6900 XT 584000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 86320 (15%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce RTX 4080 will be a bit (approximately 6%) more effective at AA than the Radeon RX 6900 XT, and will be capable of handling higher resolutions better. (explain)

GeForce RTX 4080 246960 Mpixels/sec
Radeon RX 6900 XT 233600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 13360 (6%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card can possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
