GeForce RTX 3060 Ti vs GeForce RTX 4090

Intro

The GeForce RTX 3060 Ti has a GPU core speed of 1410 MHz, and the 8192 MB of GDDR6 memory is set to run at 1750 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 4864 SPUs, 152 Texture Address Units, and 80 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the GeForce RTX 4090, which comes with core speeds of 2235 MHz on the GPU, and 1325 MHz on the 24576 MB of GDDR6X memory. It features 16384 SPUs as well as 512 Texture Address Units and 176 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce RTX 3060 Ti 200 Watts
GeForce RTX 4090 450 Watts
Difference: 250 Watts (125%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce RTX 4090 should be -100% faster than the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti overall, because of its greater data rate. (explain)

GeForce RTX 4090 1042432 MB/sec
GeForce RTX 3060 Ti (Unknown) MB/sec
Difference: 1042432 (-100%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 4090 is quite a bit (approximately 434%) more effective at AF than the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti. (explain)

GeForce RTX 4090 1144320 Mtexels/sec
GeForce RTX 3060 Ti 214320 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 930000 (434%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce RTX 4090 is the winner, by far. (explain)

GeForce RTX 4090 393360 Mpixels/sec
GeForce RTX 3060 Ti 112800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 280560 (249%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in a second. It's calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
