GeForce GTX 1630 vs Radeon R9 M270X

Intro

The GeForce GTX 1630 features clock speeds of 1740 MHz on the GPU, and 1500 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR6 RAM. It features 512 SPUs as well as 32 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R9 M270X, which comes with a clock frequency of 725 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1125 MHz. It also makes use of a 128-bit memory bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 640 SPUs, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GTX 1630 is 37% faster than the Radeon R9 M270X overall, because of its greater bandwidth. (explain)

GeForce GTX 1630 98304 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M270X 72000 MB/sec
Difference: 26304 (37%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 1630 is much (approximately 92%) better at AF than the Radeon R9 M270X. (explain)

GeForce GTX 1630 55680 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M270X 29000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 26680 (92%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 1630 is superior to the Radeon R9 M270X, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce GTX 1630 27840 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M270X 11600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 16240 (140%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
