GeForce GTX 275 vs GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB

Intro

The GeForce GTX 275 features a GPU core speed of 633 MHz, and the 896 MB of GDDR3 RAM is set to run at 1134 MHz through a 448-bit bus. It also features 240 Stream Processors, 80 Texture Address Units, and 28 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB, which has GPU core speed of 1260 MHz, and 12288 MB of GDDR6X RAM set to run at 1188 MHz through a 384-bit bus. It also is made up of 8960 Stream Processors, 280 TAUs, and 112 ROPs.

Difference: 131 Watts (60%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB should perform much faster than the GeForce GTX 275 overall. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB 934298 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 275 127008 MB/sec
Difference: 807290 (636%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB will be a lot (about 597%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce GTX 275. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB 352800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 275 50640 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 302160 (597%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB 141120 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 275 17724 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 123396 (696%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card could possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
