Radeon R9 M280X vs Radeon RX 6500 XT

Intro

The Radeon R9 M280X has core speeds of 900 MHz on the GPU, and 1375 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 896 SPUs as well as 56 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon RX 6500 XT, which features a clock speed of 2200 MHz and a GDDR6 memory speed of 2250 MHz. It also uses a 64-bit bus, and uses a 6 nm design. It is made up of 1024 SPUs, 64 TAUs, and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon R9 M280X 75 Watts
Radeon RX 6500 XT 107 Watts
Difference: 32 Watts (43%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 6500 XT should theoretically be quite a bit faster than the Radeon R9 M280X overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 6500 XT 147456 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M280X 88000 MB/sec
Difference: 59456 (68%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6500 XT will be a lot (more or less 179%) more effective at AF than the Radeon R9 M280X. (explain)

Radeon RX 6500 XT 140800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M280X 50400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 90400 (179%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6500 XT is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 6500 XT 70400 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M280X 14400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 56000 (389%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
