Radeon R9 M385X vs Radeon RX 6500 XT

Intro

The Radeon R9 M385X uses a 28 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 1100 MHz. The GDDR5 memory is set to run at a frequency of 1500 MHz on this specific model. It features 896 SPUs along with 56 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon RX 6500 XT, which uses a 6 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 2200 MHz. The GDDR6 memory works at a speed of 2250 MHz on this particular card. It features 1024 SPUs along with 64 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 6500 XT should in theory perform quite a bit faster than the Radeon R9 M385X overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 6500 XT 147456 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M385X 96000 MB/sec
Difference: 51456 (54%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6500 XT will be much (more or less 129%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R9 M385X. (explain)

Radeon RX 6500 XT 140800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M385X 61600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 79200 (129%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6500 XT is superior to the Radeon R9 M385X, by far. (explain)

Radeon RX 6500 XT 70400 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M385X 17600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 52800 (300%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
