Radeon HD 7870 XT vs Radeon RX 6600 XT

Intro

The Radeon HD 7870 XT has a core clock frequency of 925 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1500 MHz. It also features a 256-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is made up of 1536 SPUs, 96 TAUs, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 6600 XT, which has GPU clock speed of 1968 MHz, and 8192 MB of GDDR6 RAM running at 2000 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 2048 Stream Processors, 128 Texture Address Units, and 64 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 6600 XT 160 Watts
Radeon HD 7870 XT 185 Watts
Difference: 25 Watts (16%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 6600 XT should in theory be a lot faster than the Radeon HD 7870 XT overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 6600 XT 262144 MB/sec
Radeon HD 7870 XT 192000 MB/sec
Difference: 70144 (37%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6600 XT is quite a bit (approximately 184%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 7870 XT. (explain)

Radeon RX 6600 XT 251904 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 7870 XT 88800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 163104 (184%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6600 XT is superior to the Radeon HD 7870 XT, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 6600 XT 125952 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 7870 XT 29600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 96352 (326%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
