Radeon RX 580 vs Radeon RX 6600 XT

Intro

The Radeon RX 580 comes with a core clock speed of 1257 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 2000 MHz. It also uses a 256-bit bus, and uses a 14 nm design. It is comprised of 2304 SPUs, 144 Texture Address Units, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon RX 6600 XT, which features a core clock frequency of 1968 MHz and a GDDR6 memory speed of 2000 MHz. It also features a 128-bit memory bus, and uses a 7 nm design. It is comprised of 2048 SPUs, 128 Texture Address Units, and 64 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 6600 XT 160 Watts
Radeon RX 580 185 Watts
Difference: 25 Watts (16%)

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have the exact same bandwidth, so theoretically they should perform exactly the same. (explain)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6600 XT is quite a bit (about 39%) better at AF than the Radeon RX 580. (explain)

Radeon RX 6600 XT 251904 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 580 181008 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 70896 (39%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6600 XT is superior to the Radeon RX 580, by far. (explain)

Radeon RX 6600 XT 125952 Mpixels/sec
Radeon RX 580 40224 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 85728 (213%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
