GeForce GTX 970 vs GeForce RTX 3070 Ti

Intro

The GeForce GTX 970 comes with a GPU core clock speed of 1050 MHz, and the 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM runs at 1750 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 1664 Stream Processors, 104 Texture Address Units, and 64 ROPs.

Compare that to the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti, which uses a 8 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 1575 MHz. The GDDR6X RAM works at a frequency of 1188 MHz on this model. It features 6144 SPUs along with 192 Texture Address Units and 96 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 970 145 Watts
GeForce RTX 3070 Ti 290 Watts
Difference: 145 Watts (100%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti should be a lot faster than the GeForce GTX 970 in general. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3070 Ti 622899 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 970 224000 MB/sec
Difference: 398899 (178%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 3070 Ti will be much (about 177%) more effective at AF than the GeForce GTX 970. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3070 Ti 302400 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 970 109200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 193200 (177%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti is superior to the GeForce GTX 970, by far. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3070 Ti 151200 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 970 67200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 84000 (125%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
