Radeon RX 470 vs Radeon RX 6700 XT

Intro

The Radeon RX 470 has a GPU core speed of 926 MHz, and the 8192 MB of GDDR5 memory is set to run at 1650 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 2048 SPUs, 128 TAUs, and 32 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon RX 6700 XT, which uses a 7 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 2321 MHz. The GDDR6 RAM works at a speed of 2000 MHz on this particular model. It features 2560 SPUs along with 160 Texture Address Units and 64 Rasterization Operator Units.

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon RX 6700 XT should theoretically be a lot superior to the Radeon RX 470 in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 6700 XT 393216 MB/sec
Radeon RX 470 211200 MB/sec
Difference: 182016 (86%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6700 XT will be quite a bit (about 213%) more effective at AF than the Radeon RX 470. (explain)

Radeon RX 6700 XT 371360 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 470 118528 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 252832 (213%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 6700 XT will be much (approximately 401%) more effective at anti-aliasing than the Radeon RX 470, and able to handle higher resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon RX 6700 XT 148544 Mpixels/sec
Radeon RX 470 29632 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 118912 (401%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card can possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
